    The government of India has made it easier than ever to apply for a driving license now by facilitating an online application process. Here’s what you need to know about how to apply for a driving license online. 

    Benefits of applying for a driving licence online 

    You can apply for a driving license through two options: in person by applying at the regional transport office or through the online portal. These are the benefits of making an online application for your driving licence: 

    • Save time as you don’t have to wait in long queues at the RTO anymore 
    • Tracking of the status of your driving licence application can be done easily online 

    You can use the online portal to apply for a new driving licence, a learner’s license, or to renew your driving license. 

    Process of applying for a driving license online 

    The process of applying for a driving licence online requires only a few simple steps which are given below: 

    1. Visit the website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways at https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/en 
    2. From the ‘Online Services’ navigation menu on top, choose ‘Driving Licence Related Services’. 
    3. This will take you to the page https://sarathi.parivahan.gov.in/sarathiservice10/stateSelection.do 
    4. From the drop-down menu, select the state in which you want to register your vehicle. 
    5. If online applications are available in the state, you will be directed to the next page. 
    6. On the navigation panel on the left side, select the option ‘Apply Online’. 
    7. On the drop-down menu, select the option ‘New Driving License. 
    8. You will be directed to a new page which lists the stages in the application process. Click on 'Continue’ once you have read and understood the instructions. 
    9. You will be directed to the next page where you will have to select the type of license you currently hold. Select from the options given which are learner’s License, foreign driving licence, and defence driving license. 
    10. Select the option relevant to you and furnish all the details required in the fields provided. Click on ‘OK’. 
    11. Upload the scanned copies of all the documents required. 
    12. Upload the scanned copies of signature and passport size photograph. 
    13. Make sure that the dimensions of all the scanned documents are as specified on the website. 
    14. Next, select the time for the driving licence appointment at your RTO. 
    15. Make an online payment of the applicable fees for the driving license. 
    16. Your application will be forwarded to the respective RTO. 
    17. Print out payment receipt and acknowledgement slip. 
    18. Note down your web application number. This will be required when tracking the status of your application later. 
    19. Ensure that you make it to your RTO appointment on time with the required documents in original. 
    20. When you go for the driving test, follow the instructions carefully and drive accordingly. 
    21. Once the driving test has been cleared, your application for driving licence will be processed. 

    Track your driving licence application status 

    You can track the status of your driving licence online by following a few simple steps: 

    1. Visit the website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways at https://parivahan.gov.in/parivahan/en 
    2. From the ‘Online Services’ navigation menu on top, choose ‘Driving Licence Related Services’. 
    3. This will take you to the page https://sarathi.parivahan.gov.in/sarathiservice10/stateSelection.do 
    4. From the drop-down menu, select the state in which you want to register your vehicle. 
    5. If online applications are available in the state, you will be directed to the next page. 
    6. On the navigation panel on the left side, select the option ‘Apply Online’. 
    7. On the drop-down menu, select the option ‘Application Status’. 
    8.  Log on to the official website of Ministry of Road Transport and Highways https://parivahan.gov.in/sarathiservice8/sarathiHomePublic.do. 

    Miscellaneous services related to driving license 

    You can avail other services online such as: 

    • Renewal of driving licence 
    • Issue of duplicate driving licence 
    • Replacement of driving licence 
    • Change of name in driving licence 
    • Change of biometrics in driving licence 
    • And many others

    5. If online applications are available in the state, you will be directed to the next page. 
    6. On the navigation panel on the left side, select the option ‘Services on driving license’. 
    7. You will be given instructions on the next page. Click on ‘Continue’ after reading it. 
    8. Enter all the required details in the fields provided and click on ‘Proceed’.
