• Steps to Check Your Driving Licence Status

    Car Insurance
    • Protect yourself with third party or comprehensive cover
    • Use bumper to bumper policies to reduce your liability
    • Enjoy facilities like zero depreciation and roadside assistance covers

Following the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as with a third-party motor insurance policy, it is mandatory for all vehicle owners in the country to have a valid driving license. With the driving license, vehicle owners are permitted to drive anywhere in the country. However, the process of getting a driving license can be time consuming, depending on the State one is getting the document from. However, with the Government of India promoting the digitisation drive, now vehicle owners can fill in the driving license form online and can also book a slot for the driving test as per their convenience.

In addition, if the driving license applicant has cleared the driving test, he/she can check the status of their driving license online as well. Usually, following the candidate clearing the driving test, the RTO issues the driving license within 30 days or a month. This, however, could be extended, and the driving license applicant can either check the status of their driving license online or visit the RTO with the driving license token to know the status of his/her driving license. That said, for those who wish to carry out the process online, we’ve listed out the steps to check one’s driving license online.

Steps to check your registration certificate status online

Apart from a driving license and a third-party motor insurance policy, which is mandatory as per the rules set by the Government of India, vehicle owners have to have the registration certificate of their vehicle as well. If not, the vehicle owner will be penalised if pulled over by the traffic police. The registration certificate proves the ownership of the vehicle and is imperative if vehicle owners wish to ply their vehicles on the roads of India. If the vehicle owner has misplaced the RC document, he/she can check the status of the RC document online on the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. More often, checking the status of one’s registration certificate is done by owners of used vehicles, who have applied for a transfer of ownership at the RTO the vehicle is registered in. That said, vehicle owners have to follow the steps mentioned below when they wish to check the status of the registration certificate of their vehicle:

    • Visit the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways - parivahan.gov.in.
    • On the main page, click on ‘Vehicle registration related services’.
    • The page will be redirected. Enter the vehicle registration number and click on ‘Proceed’.
    • Enter the verification code.
    • The page will then display details and the status of the registration certificate. For used-car or bike owners, the status will display whether the transfer of vehicle ownership has been carried out by the RTO.

    What to keep in mind

With regard to driving license related services and the procedure, vehicle owners have to keep the below-listed points in mind:

    • Usually, following the driving license test, the RTO issues the driving license within a month if the candidate has cleared the test.
    • The RTO usually dispatches the driving license in 2 to 3 weeks to the residence of the driving license candidate.
    • Meanwhile, the driving license candidate can check the status of the driving license application online using the application number. Note, the application number is displayed on the driving license form for both the online and the offline process.
    • The first step to get a driving license is to do the learner’s license test. The test is theoretical, and only if the candidate clears the written test can he/she apply for the driving license test.
    • Driving license holders should make sure that they renew their driving license before the expiry date.
    • If an individual loses or misplaces his/her driving license, then he/she can apply for a duplicate license. The application for a duplicate driving license can be done online as well, and one can even check the status of the application online on the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
    • If an individual knows he/she is going to be travelling abroad, they can opt for an international driving license. With the international driving license, he/she can drive in most countries abroad.
