    Following the amendment of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, in order to drive their car on the roads of India, every vehicle owner has to have a four wheeler driving license. With the driving license, which will be issued by the Regional Transport Office within the jurisdiction of the candidate, the driving license holder will be permitted to drive anywhere in the country. For those who wish to apply for a driving license in the state of Andhra Pradesh, they can do so either via the online or offline process.     • Driving license for gearless vehicles

    Vehicle owners in Andhra Pradesh can apply for a driving license for vehicles without gears. For this, the applicant has to be a minimum of 16 years old.

    • Driving license for geared vehicles or light motor vehicles

    With this driving license, license holders will be allowed to drive a geared vehicle anywhere in the country and in addition, will be permitted to drive a light motor vehicle. For this type of a license, the driving license applicant has to be a minimum of 18 years old.

    • Driving license for commercial or transport vehicles

    Provided that the applicant has already got a learner’s license, he/she can go ahead and apply for a driving license online. To apply online for a four wheeler driving license in Andhra Pradesh online, the vehicle owner has to follow the steps mentioned below:

    • Visit the official website of the Andhra Pradesh Transport Department - https://aprtacitizen.epragathi.org.
    • On the main page, click on ‘driving license’.
    • Click on ‘permanent driving license’.
    • The page will be redirected, click on the ‘fresh driving license’ box and click on ‘next’.
    • The page will now display the instructions to apply and take the test for a driving license in Andhra Pradesh.
    • Click on ‘apply for DL’.
    • The applicant has to enter his/her learner’s license number and date of birth and then click on ‘next’.
    • If the candidate has been issued a learner’s license by the RTO, it will be displayed on the screen.
    • The applicant has to then fill in the application form and using the application number, book a slot for the driving test on the website.

    Note: If the applicant does not know his/her application number, he/she can use their passport details, Aadhaar card details, or mobile number to find the application number and book a slot for the driving test. In order for the driving license to be issued, the applicant will have to clear the practical car driving test.

    Steps to apply for a four wheeler driving license offline

    For the offline method of applying for a driving license, the applicant has to follow the steps listed below:

    • The applicant has to visit the RTO within his/her jurisdiction.
    • At the RTO, the applicant has to procure the application form for the driving license test. The applicant can apply for a driving license only if he/she has a valid learner’s license.
    • The applicant has to then fill the driving license application form, submit all the required documents and ensure that the form is self-attested.
    • The applicant has to then pay the application fees and then using the application number, book a slot for the driving test.

    As already mentioned, the candidate can apply for a car driving test only if he/she already has a valid learner’s license. The application for a driving license can be done 30 days after the learner’s license has been issued and within 6 months from the date of issuance of the learner’s license.

    Instructions to apply for a four wheeler driving license

    Listed below are the instructions as set by the transport department of Andhra Pradesh to apply for a driving license in the state:

    • The applicant for the driving license has to have a valid Aadhaar card.
    • In order to apply for the driving license test, the candidate has to already have a valid driving license.
    • The applicant has to book a slot for the driving test. This can be done either online using the application number or at the RTO.
    • The applicant has to pay the application fees and submit all the required documents proving identity and place of residence.
    • Based on the vehicle class chosen by the applicant, he/she has to bring the exact type of vehicle for the driving test. Example: Geared or non-geared vehicle.
    • If the LMV vehicle does not have a seat belt, then the applicant cannot take the test.
    • In the case of two-wheelers, the applicant has to wear a helmet to take the test.

    Documents required for a driving license in Andhra Pradesh

    Listed below are the required documents that the driving license applicant will have to submit to take the test:

    • Registration certificate of the vehicle the applicant will be taking the test with.
    • The driving license application form.
    • Four passport-size photographs.
    • Medical certificate to prove fitness signed by a medical practitioner.
    • Proof of age - Passport, Aadhaar card, etc.
    • Proof of identity - Voter ID card, Passport, Aadhaar card, etc.
    • Proof of address - Aadhaar card, Passport, etc.
    • Application fees for the driving test.

    The permanent driving license will be issued for a span of 20 years or till the driving license holder reaches the age of 50. In addition, if the applicant fails the practical driving test, then he/she can retake the test in 7 days. However, if the candidate fails the test 3 times, then he/she will be permitted to take the test in 60 days.
