    Those residing in the state of Haryana, need to have a valid four wheeler driving license in order to drive their car on the roads in the state and across the country. As per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, along with a third-party motor insurance policy, every vehicle owner needs to carry their driving license when driving their vehicle. Once issued the learner’s license, vehicle owners in the state of Haryana can apply for a permanent driving license either on the online portal of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways or can carry out the entire process at the RTO in their jurisdiction.

    The transport department of Haryana issues driving licenses based on the vehicle class the candidate wishes to drive in the future. Listed below are the types of vehicle classes:

    • Gearless motorcycles.
    • Motorcycle and light motor vehicle with gear.
    • Transport or commercial vehicle.
    • Road rollers.
    • Cars that fall into categories apart from what’s mentioned above.

    For each vehicle class, the candidate applying for the driving license has to procure a different application form.

    Eligibility to apply for a driving license in Haryana

    Vehicle owners in Haryana can apply for a driving license if they meet the below-listed conditions as set by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the State Transport Department of Haryana:

    • The minimum age to apply for a driving license for a geared vehicle in Haryana is 18 years old.
    • To apply for a commercial vehicle or transport vehicle driving license, the applicant should at least be 20 years old.
    • The application for the four wheeler driving license test can be made only after 30 days from the date of being issued the learner’s license. That said, the applicant should apply for the driving license test within 6 months from being issued the learner’s license.

    Steps to apply for a four wheeler driving license in Haryana

    As already mentioned, the candidate residing in the state of Haryana can carry out the process either offline or online – based on his/her convenience. The driving license applicant will need to follow the steps mentioned below:

    Online process:

    • Visit the official website of the Haryana State Transport Department.
    • On the main page, click on ‘online services’’.
    • Next, choose LL (Learner’s license) and DL (Driving License) related services.
    • The page will now display the link of the website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Click on the link.
    • On the website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, choose the state where you will take the driving test.
    • The page will be redirected, click on ‘apply online’.
    • Enter your learner’s license, date of birth and click on ‘ok’ to continue.
    • Download the application form based on the vehicle class that you wish to be permitted to drive.
    • Fill in the form, self-attest the application form and upload it on the same website along with other required documents and your passport-size photographs.
    • Now, using the application number, pay the fees and then book a slot for the driving license test as per your convenience and the availability of the slots.
    • Show up on the day for the driving license test with your application form, original learner's license, required documents and the registration certificate of the vehicle/car. If the vehicle that will be used is not yours, you will need a written consent from the vehicle owner permitting you to use the car for the driving test.

    Offline process:

    • Visit the RTO in your jurisdiction.
    • Procure the application form, fill it and self-attest the form.
    • Submit the application form to the Regional Transport Officer, along with the required documents and your learner’s license.
    • Make the payment for the application and book a slot for the driving test.

    If the applicant clears the driving test, he/she will be issued the driving license document or card, which will be posted to his/her house by the RTO within 30 days of clearing the test.

    Documents required to apply for a four wheeler driving license in Haryana

    The driving license candidate in Haryana will have to submit the below-listed documents:

    • Application form – based on the vehicle class.
    • Proof of age – Birth Certificate, Aadhaar card, Passport, etc.
    • Proof of residence – Passport, Voter ID card, Ration Card, etc.
    • Registration certificate of the vehicle he/she will be using for the test.
    • Learner’s license.
    • Recent passport-size photographs of the applicant.

    Once the applicant finishes the driving test, he/she can use either the application number (for the online process) or the driving license token number (offline process) to check the status of his/her driving license on the website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
