    As per the law set by the Government of India, for a vehicle owner to be eligible to drive on the roads in the country, he/she needs to have a valid driving license. In some states, vehicle owners can carry out the process of applying for a driving license online, but for those states that do not offer the service online, they will have to resort to getting the job done at the respective RTO. In the state of Karnataka, vehicle owners that wish to avail a car driving license can download the relevant application forms online, but the process has to be carried out at the RTO. To apply for a four wheeler driving license, the applicant has to first clear the learner’s license written test and then he/she can proceed to apply and take the car driving test. That said, we’ve listed out the various aspects of availing a driving license in Karnataka and what’s required.

    Types of Four Wheeler driving licenses one can obtain in Karnataka

    Based on their needs, vehicle owners can apply for the various types of driving licenses as listed below:

    • Driving license for a geared vehicle or a light motor vehicle

    Those who wish to drive or ride a four-wheeler can apply for this type of driving license. For this license, the applicant has to be at least 18 years old.

    • Transport vehicle driving license

    For those who wish to have a four wheeler driving license for commercial purposes, they will need to apply for this type of license. The applicant will have to go through a training at any Government Motor School prior to applying for this license. In Karnataka, the minimum age to apply for a transport driving license is 20 years old.

    Steps to apply for a four weeler driving license in Karnataka

    Applicants will have to follow the steps given below to get a driving license in Karnataka:

    • As already mentioned, prior to applying for a permanent driving license, the vehicle owner will first have to clear the learner's license test.
    • The applicant can download the form to apply for the driving license on the Karnataka State Transport Department website or from the website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The vehicle owner can also procure the form at the RTO.
    • At the RTO, the applicant for the learner’s license will have to submit documents such as address proof, proof of identification, and recent passport-size photographs and ensure that he/she knows the road signs as well as the on-road rules and regulations.
    • If the applicant clears the learner’s written test, he/she will be issued the learner’s license within 7 days from clearing the test.
    • Next, the individual will have to apply for the driving license. The individual can download the forms online.
    • The applicant will then have to visit the RTO, submit all the required documents and then book a slot for the driving test.
    • The applicant will have to then take the practical test for the driving license.

    If the applicant clears the practical driving test, the driving license will be issued by the RTO within a month.

    Documents required for a driving license in Karnataka

    Driving license applicants will have to submit the below-listed documents:

    • Form 4 - which is the application form for a driving license.
    • Proof of Identity - Passport, Aadhaar card, Voter’s ID card, etc.
    • Proof of Address - Aadhaar card, passport, Voter’s ID card, etc.
    • Proof of age- birth certificate, school certificate.
    • Application fees and fees for issuance of the driving license.
    • Recent passport-size photographs.

    Once the driving license applicant has finished the practical driving test, he/she can check the status of the driving license on the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways using the driving license application number. If the driving license holder loses his/her driving license, he/she can apply for a duplicate driving license using Form LLD. The form can be procured online or at the RTO.
