    For those who wish to avail a driving license in the state of Telangana, they can do so at the RTO in their jurisdiction. Prior to applying for the driving test, the applicant has to already have his/her learner’s license. For the learner’s license, the candidate will be quizzed on the on-road rules and regulations as set by the state transport department and only once the learner’s license has been issued, can he/she apply for the driving test. The application for the driving test can only be done 30 days after the learner’s license has been issued.

    To get the permanent four wheeler driving license, the applicant will have to clear the practical car driving test. His/her skills will be tested based on his/her ability to control the vehicle, and to follow the rules and regulations on the road. Once the candidate for the permanent driving license clears the practical driving test, the driving license document or card will be posted to the home address of the candidate by the Regional Transport Office (RTO). That said, listed below is the procedure to apply for a driving license in the state of Telangana and the requirements of the process.

    Eligibility criteria to apply for a four wheeler driving license in Telangana

    In order to apply for the driving test in Telangana, the applicant has to meet the conditions as listed below:

    • For the permanent driving license, the applicant has to be a minimum of 18 years old.
    • In order to apply for the practical driving test, the applicant should have already been issued a learner's license from the RTO. In addition, the candidate can apply for the driving license only after a month of being issued the learner’s license and before the expiry of the learner's license which is 6 months from the date of issue
    • For a transport or a four wheeler commercial driving license, the applicant has to be a minimum of 20 years old. In addition, the candidate for the commercial or transport driving license, should be trained and attempt the test through a Government Motor Driving School.
    • Only if the applicant for the permanent driving license knows all the rules and regulations as set by the state transport department and Ministry of Road Transport and Highways can he/she be able to clear the driving test.

    Types of driving licenses issued in Telangana

    Listed below are the types of driving licenses issued in the state of Telangana:

    • For a motorcycle without gear

    For a vehicle below 50cc, the applicant has to be a minimum age of 16 years old. For vehicles above 50cc and gearless, the applicant has to be a minimum of 18 years old.

    • For light motor vehicles

    The applicant of a light motor vehicle driving license has to be at least 18 years old. This type of a driving license permits the candidate to drive a car that falls under the light motor vehicle category.

    • For commercial or transport vehicles

    For this type of a license, the applicant has to be a minimum of 20 years old. In addition, as already mentioned, the applicant for the commercial or transport driving license has to first do a driving course at a Government Motor Driving School, and the motor driving school will carry out the procedure leading to the practical driving test.

    Steps to apply for a four wheeler driving license in Telangana

    In order to apply for a driving license in Telangana, the applicant has to follow the steps mentioned below:

    • Visit the Regional Transport Office in your jurisdiction.
    • Procure the application form. The application form will vary depending on whether the applicant is applying for a private driving license or a commercial or transport driving license.
    • Fill up the application form. The application form will contain details such as the full name of the applicant, father’s name, house address, education qualification, date of birth, blood group, etc.
    • The candidate has to then submit the filled and attested application form along with relevant documents and learner’s license that will be verified by the Regional Transport Officer. The candidate has to also submit his/her recent passport-size photographs.
    • Once the submitted documents have been verified, the Regional Transport Officer will allot a driving test slot for the driving test.
    • The applicant will have to show up on the allotted day of the driving test and submit the application form, learner’s license, relevant documents, and the registration certificate of the vehicle the test will be taken with.

    As already mentioned, if the candidate clears the practical driving test, the driving license will be sent by speed post to his/her house address. If he/she fails the test, then he/she will have to re-appear for the test on a day scheduled by the Regional Transport Officer.

    Documents required to apply for a driving test in Telangana

    Along with the application form for the driving test in Telangana, the applicant will have to submit the documents as listed below:

    • Application form - depending on whether it is for a private driving license or a commercial/transport driving license.
    • Proof of age - Birth certificate, Passport, Aadhaar card, Voter ID card, etc.
    • Proof of address - Passport, Aadhaar card, Voter ID card, etc.
    • Registration certificate of the car. If the vehicle used for the test is not of the applicant’s, then the applicant has to submit a written consent from the vehicle owner allowing him/her to use the vehicle for the test.
    • Recent passport-size photographs.
    • Proof of medical fitness with Form 1(a). The medical certificate has to be attested by a medical practitioner.

    If the candidate does not receive his/her four wheeler driving license within a month, he/she can use the driving license application token number that was issued by the Regional Transport Officer to check the status of the driving license at the RTO. In the future, if the driving license holder wishes to get a duplicate of his/her driving license or renew his/her driving license, he/she can do so at the RTO which issued the driving license. The driving license is valid for a period of 20 years or till the driving license holder reaches the age of 50 years, whichever is earlier.
