    In accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, all vehicle/car owners in the state of Uttar Pradesh need to have a valid four wheeler driving license to ply their vehicle on the roads of the state. In order to apply for a driving license in the state of Uttar Pradesh, vehicle owners have to first clear the learners’ license test in the Regional Transport Office (RTO) within their jurisdiction. On completion of a month or 30 days from the date of being issued the learner’s license, the candidate can apply for the driving license test. The test for the permanent driving license is practical and will test the skills of the candidate, on how well he/she can control the vehicle, and his/her knowledge of the on-road rules and regulations as set by the Transport Department of Uttar Pradesh.

    Vehicle owners in the state of Uttar Pradesh have the privilege of applying for their permanent driving license either online or offline. For the online process, the driving license applicant can either download the application form from the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department official website or from the website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. The applicant will have to then fill the form, self-attest and upload the form along with the relevant documents and then book a slot for the test. For the offline process, the whole process will have to be done at the RTO in the jurisdiction of the candidate.

    Types of driving licenses issued in Uttar Pradesh

    The Transport Department of Uttar Pradesh issues the following driving licenses:

    • Light motor vehicle with gears

    This permanent driving license is for those who wish to drive a vehicle with gears, four-wheeler vehicles. The driving license applicant should be a minimum of 18 years old and should intent to use the driving license for private purposes only.

    • Transport vehicle driving license

    This type of a driving license is for those who wish to drive a transport or a commercial vehicle. The applicant should be a minimum of 20 years old and should have undergone a driving course conducted by a Government Motor Driving School.

    Eligibility criteria to apply for a four wheeler driving license in Uttar Pradesh

    Four wheeler vehicle owners should meet the following conditions to apply for a permanent driving license in the state of Uttar Pradesh:

    • Should be a minimum of 18 years old to apply for a driving license for a vehicle with gears (car) and one that will be used for private purposes.
    • If one applying for a commercial or transport permanent driving license, he/she should be a minimum of 20 years old. In addition, he/she should procure the application form for the driving test from the Government Motor Driving School once he/she has completed the training course.

    The candidate in the state of Uttar Pradesh can apply for the permanent driving test only 30 days after being issued the learner’s license.

    Steps to apply for a driving license in Uttar Pradesh

    Listed below are the online and offline procedures to apply for a driving license in Uttar Pradesh:

    Online process:

    • Visit the official website of the Uttar Pradesh Transport website - www.uptransport.co.in
    • On the main page, click on ‘online services’ and then choose ‘new driving license’ under driving license services.
    • The page will be redirected to the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
    • Choose the state you wish to take the driving license test in. In this case, choose Uttar Pradesh.
    • Now, under ‘apply now’, click on ‘new driving license’.
    • Enter your learner’s license number, date of birth and click on ‘ok’ to proceed.
    • You will now have to download the application form and fill it.
    • On the same page, upload the application form along with relevant documents and your recent passport-size photographs.
    • Using the application number, book a slot for the driving license test.
    • You will now have to pay for the fees for the application.
    • On the day of the driving license test that you have chosen, appear with your application form, relevant documents, learner’s license and the registration certificate of the car you will be taking the test with.

    If the candidate clears the driving license practical test, the driving license card will be posted to his/her home address within 30 days.

    Offline process:

    • Visit the RTO in your jurisdiction.
    • Procure the application form depending on the type of license you wish to apply for – private or transport/commercial driving license.
    • Fill the application form and self-attest it.
    • Along with the application form, the candidate will be required to submit his/her recent passport-size documents, relevant government authorized documents and original learner’s driving license.
    • Once all the required documents and application form have been submitted, the candidate will have to choose a slot for the driving license practical test.
    • On the day of the test, the applicant has to show up with the original learner’s license, registration certificate of the vehicle(car) he/she will be taking the test with, the application form and required documents that have been attested.
    • The RTO officer will then test the skills of the candidate, and his/her knowledge of the road rules and regulations.
    • As with the online process, if the candidate clears the test, the driving license document will be sent to his/her home address by post by the RTO.

    Documents required to apply for a driving license test in Uttar Pradesh

    Along with the application form, the driving license candidate will have to submit the below-listed documents prior to taking the driving test:

    • Proof of age – Birth certificate, Aadhaar card, passport, etc.
    • Proof of address – Passport, Voter ID card, Aadhaar card, etc.
    • Original learner’s license.
    • Registration certificate of the vehicle that will be used for the driving test.
    • Application fee receipt.
    • Application form – Form 4 for a private driving license, Form 5 for a commercial or transport driving license.

    Once the test is completed, the candidate can check the status of his/her four wheeler driving license on the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways using the application number. If not, he/she can use the driving license token number and enquire about the driving license at the RTO where he/she took the driving license test. Once the candidate has been issued a particular driving license (commercial/transport or private), he/she can use only that particular vehicle class and is permitted to drive a vehicle that belongs to that particular vehicle class, anywhere in the country and not just in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
