    FASTag enables you to make cashless payments at toll plazas on National Highways. This easy-to-use device is the best solution to beat long queues at toll plazas while also saving time and fuel. Since this device facilitates automatic deduction of toll fees you needn’t stop at the toll plazas to pay the toll fee in cash. FASTag is currently used in more than 450 toll plazas across National Highways. 

    What is FASTag? 

    It is a rectangular 10x5 cm electronic device offered by select banks/agencies for facilitating digital toll collection in India. This tag is provided to vehicle owners as a part of the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) Program launched by the National Highways Authority of India in cooperation with NICP and NIHP. It is made of high-grade paper and contains chip and antenna inside its layers. 

    For using a FASTag to make toll payments, you must get a tag account created. The tag will be linked to a prepaid savings/current account from which the toll charges will be deducted at the toll plazas.  

    How do FASTag works? 

    FASTag makes use of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to make cashless payment of toll fees at the toll plazas. It contains information that can be read by the RFID readers installed at the plazas. When a vehicle approaches a toll plaza, the toll readers scan the tag and read the information. The toll fee is then automatically deducted from the prepaid account linked to the FASTag. Since the entire process is digital, the vehicle can pass through the plaza without any stop. 

    FASTag works only on the special lanes designated for FASTag users at toll plazas listed under the NETC program. However, vehicles with FASTag can pass through any lane in a toll plaza by making toll payment in cash. A vehicle without a valid FASTag will be charged double the toll fee upon entering a FASTag lane and the amount has to be paid in cash immediately. If a FASTag account has insufficient fund the vehicle needs to stop and pay the toll fee in cash. Once the amount is deducted, you will receive an SMS on your registered mobile number with all the transaction details. 

    Who implemented FASTag in India? 

    National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) and Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) is responsible for implementing this program. They conduct this program with the assistance of toll plaza concessionaires, FASTag issuer agencies, and toll transaction acquirers like select banks.  

    Features of FASTag 

    • FASTag is interoperative and one FASTag can be used at all the toll plazas that are integrated with the FASTag program.  
    • It is functional only on special FASTag lanes demarcated for electronic toll collection at select toll plazas. 
    • This is an RFID technology-enabled device and thus the information available in it can be read by the RFID toll readers at the toll stations. 
    • FASTag comes with an unlimited validity period. You can use it until it can be read by the RFID toll readers installed at the toll plazas.  
    • If your FASTag gets damaged from wear and tear or is tampered with, a new FASTag will be issued by the concerned bank or agency for an additional cost upon surrendering the damaged FASTag. 
    • A FASTag account can be recharged through cash only at authorised Point of Sales (POS) locations of the issuing bank at bank branches/toll plazas. It can also be recharged online through the website of the issuing bank/agency. 
    • Your FASTag account can be recharged with a minimum amount of Rs.100. 
    • The maximum recharge limit for KYC customers is Rs.1 lakh. Non-KYC customers can load up to Rs.20,000 in their account. 

    Benefits of using FASTag 

    • With this tag affixed to the windscreen of your vehicle, you can pass through the toll booths without stopping to pay the toll fee in cash. 
    • This RFID-enabled device serves as a prepaid toll pass and you needn't carry cash or the exact change for making toll payments while travelling. 
    • When you opt for this facility, you will be provided with a FASTag customer portal where you can log in and access your account statement whenever you want. 
    • Your FASTag account can be recharged by making payment through NEFT/ RTGS, credit card, debit card, Net Banking, cash, and cheque. 
    • You will receive notifications for every transaction done through your tag via SMS. The transaction alerts will be sent to your registered mobile number. 
    • You can access your periodic statements of the transactions made through your tag by logging into the FASTag customer portal of the issuing bank. You can also check your account balance, and perform several other activities on the portal. 
    • If you frequently travel through a specific route, you can opt for a monthly/local pass applicable only to a specific toll plaza. 
    • If you are a vehicle owner residing within 10 km of a toll plaza you will get special concession for local vehicles on every transaction done through your FASTag.  
    • You can get 2.5% cashback on every transaction made by using your FASTag for FY2019-20. The cashback amount will be credited to your account within 7 days of the following month. However, the amount may change from time to time. 

    How to buy/get a FASTag? 

    You can purchase a FASTag both online and offline. However, it is more convenient and hassle-free to buy a tag online from the official website of the FASTag issuing agencies/banks. 

    Offline method 

    1. To create a FASTag account, visit a Point of Sale (POS) location of the chosen issuer bank/agency either at their office or toll plazas. 
    2. Make sure to drive your vehicle to the POS location as the FASTag needs to be affixed to your vehicle’s windscreen by a representative of the issuer bank/agency. 
    3. Submit these documents with a duly filled and signed application form for FASTag: 
      • Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC Book) 
      • A valid driving license for address proof and ID proof 
      • Passport-size photograph of the vehicle owner/customer
      • KYC documents of the vehicle owner for identity and address proof:  
        •  Individual customer: PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID card, etc.  
        •  Corporate customer: 
          • For a Proprietorship, proprietor’s address proof, PAN card, Shop Act, and other Firm proofs are required. 
          • For a partnership/private limited/public limited company, corporate’s PAN card, signing authority's photo ID, names and addresses of directors and partners, and Registration Certificate/Partnership Deed/Certificate of Incorporation of the firm are required. 

      Note: Carry the original documents along with the photocopies to the POS location. 

    4. Pay the joining fee and one-time security deposit applicable to your vehicle through a convenient payment mode. 
    5. The bank/agency will issue a FASTag upon successful verification of the submitted documents. 
    6. A representative of the issuer agency will attach the FASTag to your vehicle's windscreen.  
    7. After its issuance, the FASTag will take 24 to 48 business hours to get activated. 

    Online method 

    You can also buy a FASTag directly from the issuer bank/agency by following these steps: 

    • Visit the official website of the desired agency/bank. 
    • Fill up the online application form with all the required KYC and vehicle-related details. 
    • Upload the copy of the requested documents on the portal. 
    • Pay the applicable tag issuance fee and security deposit online.  

    Once the documents and details provided by you are successfully verified a FASTag will be issued by the concerned bank/agency. Post-purchase, you will have to regularly recharge/top up your FASTag account as required. If you don’t have enough balance in your tag account, ensure to recharge your account/wallet at least 30 mins before visiting a toll plaza location. 

    Fees and Charges of FASTag 

    FASTag users will have to pay certain fees and charges while buying a FASTag. The fees and charges that you will have to pay for using this service are as follows: 

    1. Joining and Reissuance Fee

    *Certain banks may give some discount on this amount. 

    2. One-time Security Deposit: You will have to pay a one-time fee ranging from Rs.200 to Rs.500 as a refundable security deposit. This fee varies depending on the type of vehicle given below:

    3. Convenience fee: You will be charged with a nominal convenience fee for all FASTag transactions conducted online. 

    Note: A threshold balance/minimum amount should be maintained in your FASTag account. The amount varies as per the vehicle class.

    This 4-digit helpline number has been launched by MoRTH/NHAI/IHMCL for addressing FASTag complaints at toll plaza level. You can dial this number from your mobile or landline number.

    1. Is it compulsorily to apply for a FASTag? 
    2. No, FASTag is not compulsory as of now. It is completely voluntary. However, it may become compulsory in India in the future to promote the digital drive. 

    3. Does a FASTag user always have to pass through the FASTag lane? 
    4. You can drive your vehicle through any lane in a toll plaza by paying the toll fee in cash. However, you should always use the FASTag lane for better execution of digital toll payment. 

    5. Can I apply for a new FASTag for my vehicle when I already have one for that? 
    6. You can have only one FASTag for a particular vehicle. If you approach the issuer agency/bank for a new FASTag, you will have to deactivate the already issued FASTag for that vehicle first. Otherwise, you will be charged from both your FASTag accounts till you deactivate the first account. 

    7. Can one FASTag be used for multiple vehicles?  
    8. No, one FASTag can’t be used for more than one vehicle as that might lead to operational issues. If you have more than one vehicle you should use a separate tag for each vehicle. Similarly, multiple FASTags can’t be used for one vehicle. You will be responsible for any operational issue occurring due to the wrong usage of FASTags.  

    9. What to do if my FASTag is damaged or unreadable?  
    10. If the tag is damaged or is not readable anymore, you should approach the issuing bank/agency for a replacement of the damaged tag. You will have to surrender the existing tag to get the new one. 

    11. Can I sell/transfer my vehicle which is registered against a FAStag?  
    12. Yes, you can sell your vehicle even if it has a FASTag issued against it. However, you will have to inform the tag issuer agency about the vehicle being transferred or sold.  

    13. What to do in the event of FASTag loss?  
    14. In such an instance, you will have to immediately contact the issuing bank/agency so that they can block the lost or misplaced FASTag. Then you need to apply for creating a new account. Once the new FASTag account is created, the bank/agency will transfer the available balance from the previous account to the new one.  

    15. What to do if an incorrect deduction has been made from my FASTag account?  
    16. You can report the incident to the issuing bank/agency by calling the customer care helpline number. The issuer agency will review the deduction and if the claim is found to be correct, the amount will be refunded to your account. 

    17. Can I use the tag after relocating to a new location?  
    18. The FASTag can be used at any toll station that is integrated with the NETC program. However, you should inform the issuing bank/agency about the change in your address, city, or state. 

    19.  How to pass through the toll plaza if the ETC equipment is not working?  
    20. If the ETC equipment is not working at the toll plaza, you can make toll payments in cash at the plaza. If you are a concessionaire, report the issue to the bank by calling the customer helpline number. You can also call 1033 to inform the NHAI authority about the matter. 

    21. What will happen if the balance in your tag account is lesser than the threshold limit? 
    22. If the balance in your FASTag account is lesser than the threshold limit, your tag will not work at the toll plaza and it will be marked in the category of 'Low Balance tag'. In such case, to pass through the toll plaza you will need to pay the toll fee in cash. 

    23. What to do if the toll plaza doesn’t accept my FASTag? 
    24. If you are stopped at a toll plaza despite having a valid FASTag, contact the National Highways helpline number 1033 to get the issue addressed. The representatives will take the required action. 

    25. If my vehicle is registered with chassis number can I apply for a FASTag? 
    26. Yes, you can apply for a FASTag even if your vehicle is registered with a chassis number or vehicle identification number. Just contact the customer care number of the issuing agency to get the chassis number updated with your vehicle registration number. 

    27. Whom should I address my grievances to?  
    28. In case of any complaint or grievance, you should call the helpline number of the issuing bank or agency that had issued the device to register your complaints. If the grievance isn’t addressed to your satisfaction, then you can approach IHMCL to escalate the matter. 

    29. Whom should I complain to if the toll collection staff misbehaves with me? 
    30. In case of misconduct or rude behaviour of the toll collection staff at the toll plaza, you should file a complaint with the concerned Project Directors at the toll plaza. 

    The NETC program will incorporate more toll plazas soon to make driving on National Highways hassle-free. Hence, it will be wise to get a FASTag for your car and enjoy cashless toll transactions.
