    It is crucial for every individual in Kerala to hold a four wheeeler driving licence to use a four-wheeler as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Failure to obtain or even carry a licence while driving is a punishable offence. If a person is caught by the traffic police and he/she does not have a driving licence, he/she will be fined or imprisoned.

    The driving licence is issued by Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) and Kerala has 17 regional and 42 sub-regional offices.     Steps to apply for a four wheeler learner’s license in Kerala

    Applying for a learner’s licence in Kerala is simple. One can apply in person at the nearest RTO or online through the official website of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department. The steps for both, the online as well as offline processes, are given below:

    Learner’s license offline process:

    • Visit an RTO nearby.
    • Collect the application form.
    • Fill in the form, attach the relevant documents, and submit it at the RTO.
    • Pay the fees applicable for application of the learner’s licence as well as the learner’s licence test.
    • Book a slot for the test to be taken on a convenient date.
    • Appear for the test and clear the test to obtain the learner’s licence.

    Learner’s license online process:

    • Visit the official website of the Motor Vehicles Department of the Government of Kerala: https://mvd.kerala.gov.in/
    • Find ‘Licence’ under ‘Apply Online’ on the right-hand side of the website. Click on it to be redirected to another page.
    • Then, click on ‘Apply Online’ next to ‘New Learner’s Licence’.
    • On clicking on ‘Apply Online’, a new web page will open. Read the instructions and click on ‘Apply Now’.
    • Fill up the application form and click on ‘Next’.
    • In the next step, upload the necessary documents including the signature and recent photograph.
    • Book a convenient slot for the learner’s licence test.
    • Pay the fee online.
    • Take a printout of the application that is generated.
    • Submit the application along with the necessary documents.
    • Appear for the test as per the scheduled date and time.
    • You will be issued the learner’s licence once you clear the test.

    Documents required to apply for a four wheeler learner’s license in Kerala

    The list of documents to be submitted to get a learner’s licence are:

    • Form 1A
    • Proof of address
    • Proof of age

    The learner’s licence is valid for a period of 6 months. A person can use this period to hone his/her driving skills so that he/she can clear the practical driving test with flying colours. The individual can apply for a four wheeler permanent driving licence after completion of a period of 1 month. After clearing the driving test, the person will receive the driving licence that is valid for either 20 years or until he/she reaches the age of 50 years, whichever is earlier.
