    If you own a vehicle and wish to drive it on the roads of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), you will have to get it registered in a Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Jammu and Kashmir. The RTOs are available in all the districts of J&K and you can visit your nearest RTO to get your vehicle registered. Apart from getting your vehicle registered, there are various other functions that an RTO employs. Some of them include issuing and renewing of driving license, issuing duplicate driving license, etc. 

    The functions of Jammu and Kashmir RTO 

    Some of the functions of Jammu and Kashmir RTOs are: 

    • Issuing and renewing driving license. 
    • Issuing and renewing registration certificates and permits. 
    • Collecting fees and token taxes. 
    • Getting Pollution Checking Centers registered. 
    • Granting registration and license to motor schools. 
    • Acting as a state transport authority. 
    • Fixing of freight and fare. 
    • Granting of conductor's license. 
    • Issuing and renewing fitness certificates with respect to commercial and non-commercial vehicles. 
    • Ensuring that the ‘Motor Vehicles Act’ is implemented. 
    • Acting as an agency which is employed with the job of collecting fines, road tax, license permit fees, etc. 
    • Coordinating road safety measures. 
    • Introducing a new class of vehicles in the J&K transport system. 
    • Acting as controlling officers over their respective ARTOs. 
    • Conducting surprise inspections to check whether the ‘Motor Vehicles Act’ is being violated or not.

    Hence, you can visit your nearest RTO in Jammu and Kashmir to get your vehicle registered. You can collect the important forms from the RTO office or download them online. You will have to submit all the required documents which will be verified by an RTO official. Once the verification is complete and all the details provided by you are correct, the RTO will send you the Registration Certificate (RC) to your communication address.
