    The Transport Department of Tripura is a state-level unit, within the State Government of Tripura. A number of District Transport Offices (DTOs) function under the Transport Department of Tripura. The department is responsible for providing various services to residents of the state such as registration of motor vehicles, regulating the traffic system in the state, improvement of transport services within Tripura, etc.  

    Functions of the Tripura Transport Department 

    Certain general functions of the transport department of the state and the various units that function under it are as follows: 

    • Enforcing the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act: One of the primary functions of the Transport Department of Tripura is to implement and enforce the rules and laws under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. 
    • Registration of motor vehicles: Individuals purchasing new motor vehicles are required to approach a registering authority in the state to obtain a registration certificate for their vehicle.  
    • Taxation of motor vehicles: The department authorities are responsible for the taxation of motor vehicles. 
    • Issuance of driving licence: DTOs in the state issue driving licences to applicants. The licencing authority conducts a driving licence test, after which the licence is issued to individuals who clear the test.  
    • Improvement of the transport system: Officials employed with the Transport Department of Tripura introduce measures to improve the transport system in the state.  
    • Collection of road tax: The department is also in charge of levying and collecting road taxes from those who own motorised vehicles.   
    • Regulation of the traffic system: The department is responsible for regulating the traffic system in the state.  
    • Issuance of fitness certificate: Department officials issue fitness certificates for motor vehicles, once an application is made for the same.  
    • Issuance of permits: Permits for various types of vehicles are issued by the department.
