    The ‘Rules of Road Regulation’ sets down the rules to be followed by drivers of all vehicles in India. Following these rules ensures road safety for all. Violation of these rules will attract fines and penalties as per the Motor Vehicle Acts, 1988. While the rules, traffic offences, and penalties are common across the country, there are certain state-specific rules that you need to be aware of. These are the rules in the state of Madhya Pradesh:

    (i) Disqualified individual driving a vehicle or (ii) applying for or acquiring a driving license or (iii) seeking a license without disclosing any of the endorsements that were made on a driving license that was held previously.  S.23r/w.S.182(1) of M. V. Act.  3 months or Rs. 500 
    Driving a vehicle at excessive speeds  S.112r/w S.183(1) of M.V. Act.  Rs. 400 for first offence   Rs. 1,000 for second or subsequent offences 
    Any individual permitting his employee or a person subject to his control to drive a vehicle at excessive speeds  S. 112 r/w S.183 (2) of M. V. Act.  Rs. 300 for first offence   Rs. 500 for second or subsequent offences 
    Driving or permitting to drive a vehicle that carries excess load  Ss.113(3),114,115 r/w S.194(1) of M. V. Act.  Minimum Rs. 2,000 and additional Rs. 1,000 per tonne of excess load together with charges for off-loading the excess load 
    Driving refusing to stop and allow his vehicle to be weighed or removing the load prior to be weighed  S.114 r/w S.194 (2) of M. V. Act.  Rs. 3,000 
    Any person driving or allowing another to drive any vehicle with a left-hand steering control unless it is equipped with a device of a prescribed nature.  S.120 r/w S.177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    Driving dangerously or abetment of dangerous driving  S.184/S.188 of M. V.  Act.  6 months or Rs.1,000 for first  offence or  both   2 years or Rs.2,000 for second or subsequent offence within 3 years of the previous commission or both 
    A drunken person or a person under the influence of drugs driving a vehicle or abetment of such a person to drive a vehicle  S.185/S.188 of M. V. Act.  6 months or Rs. 2,000 for first offence or both.  2 Years or Rs. 3000 for second or subsequent offences committed within 3 year of the previous commission or both 
    Driving when physically or mentally unfit to drive or the abetment of such driving  S.186/S.188 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 200 for the first offence   Rs. 500 for the second or subsequent offences 
    Driving a vehicle that is not insured  S.146 r/w. S. 196 of M. V. Act.  3 months or Rs. 1,000 or both 
    Failure of a driver to obey traffic signs (such as jumping the red light, violation of the yellow line, changing lanes without indication, etc.)  S.119 r/w S.177 of M. V.  Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for the second or subsequent offences 
    Failure of the driver to make the prescribed signals on occasions duly prescribed  S.121 r/w. S.177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for the second or subsequent offences 
    Driver allowing any person to obstruct his control of the vehicle (Sitting at a place that will hamper driving, etc.)  S.125 r/w S.177 of M. v. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for the second or subsequent offences 
    Driver of a two-wheeler or a motor cycle carrying more than one person in addition to himself (triple riding)  S.128 (1) r/w S.177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for the second or subsequent offences 
    Driver and pillion rider not wearing protective headgear (helmet)  S.129 r/w S. 177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for the second or subsequent offences 
    Any person in-charge or a vehicle or a trailer abandoning or permitting to abandon, etc. in a public place (Improper and obstructive parking)  Ss.122, 127 r/w S.177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for the second or subsequent offences (owner shall also be liable for the towing costs) 
    Any person in-charge of a vehicle carrying or permitting to carry any person on the running board etc.  S.123(1) r/w S.177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    Any person in charge of a vehicle keeping the vehicle or allowing to keep the vehicle stationery without ensuring the required precautions are in place  S.126 r/w S.177 of M. V.  Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    Failure to take necessary precautions at unguarded railway level crossings  S.131 r/w S. 177 of M. V.  Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    Failure of the driver to stop in certain cases where the vehicle is required to stop  S.132 r/w S.177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences

    Driving a motor vehicle without displaying number plates  R.50 of C.M.V. Rules r/w S.177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    Any person travelling on the running board or on the top or on the bonnet of a motor vehicle.  S.123(2) r/w S.177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    Any person keeping a disabled vehicle in any public place such that it causes impediment to the free flow of traffic.  S. 201 of M.V.  Act.  Rs. 50 per hour besides the towing charges 
    Owner of a vehicle failing to intimate changes of residence or place of business within the prescribed time period  S.49 r/w S.177 of M.V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences (However, the State Government may prescribe different amounts according to the period of delay) 
    Failure to report to the Registering Authority the fact of the transfer of vehicle within a prescribed time period  S.50 r/w S.177 of M. V. Act.  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences (However, the State Government may prescribe different amounts according to the period of delay) 
    Alteration of a vehicle without prior authorisation (including those facilitating its operation with a different type of fuel)  S.52 r/w S.177 of M. V. Act  Rs.100 for first offence   Rs.300 for second or subsequent offences (However, the State Government may prescribe different amounts according to the period of delay) 
    Driver, in any public place, not producing his license on demand to any police officer who is in uniform  S.130(1) r/w S.177 of M. V. Act  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    The owner or driver or the person in-charge of a motor vehicle failing to show the certificate of insurance of the vehicle on demand by a registering authority or any other officer of the Motor Vehicles Department  S.130(3) r/w S.177 of M. V. Act  Rs. 100 for first offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    Any person driving a motor vehicle in any public place failing to produce, on demand by a police officer who is in uniform or officers of the Motor Vehicles Department, the following:   (a) The certificate of insurance   (b) The certificate of registration  (c) The driving license  S.158 r/w S.177 of M. V.  Act  Rs. 100 for first offence.   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    In the case of injury of any person or damage to property of a third party in a motor vehicle accident, the driver or person who is in charge of the vehicle not doing the following:  (a) Not providing medical aid to the victim or victims of the accident.   (b) Not giving information regarding the accident and other details to the police officer or at the nearest police station on demand   (c) Not giving information about the accident to the insurer  S.134 r/w S.187 of M. V.  Act  3 months or Rs. 500 for first offence or both   6 months or Rs.1, 000 for subsequent offence or both 
    Any person driving or owner allowing another to drive a vehicle that does not have effective registration  or a vehicle that  displays  false  registration  marks  in  public places or  in  any  other  places  (such as using "unregistered  vehicles"  or  displaying"  "applied  for")  S.39(1) r/w S. 192(1) of M. V.  Act  Upto  Rs. 5,000 for first offence but not less than Rs. 2,000    One year or  upto  Rs. 10,000 for  second or  subsequent  offences  but  not  less  than  Rs. 5,000 or both 
    Plying a vehicle with a registration mark  of  another  state  for a period that exceeds 12  months  S.47 r/w S.177 of M. V.  Act  Rs. 100 for first  offence   Rs. 300 for second or subsequent offences 
    Any individual driving  or allowing  to  drive  a  vehicle  without  having the permit necessary for  the  route  or the area  in  which  or  for  the  purpose  for  which  it  is  being  used  S. 66(1) r/w S.192-A of M. V. Act  Upto  Rs. 5,000 for first offence but  not  less  than  Rs. 2,000    Upto one year but not being less than 3 months, upto Rs.10,000, for second or  subsequent  offence  but  not  less  than  Rs. 5,000 
    Any individual driving or allowing to drive in  any  public  place  any kind of  motor vehicle that is defective, if such defect results in an accident that causes bodily injury or damage to property  S. 190 (1) of M. V.  Act  3 months or Rs. 1,000 or both 
    Any person driving or allowing to drive in a public place any kind of motor vehicle which violates the standards that are prescribed in relation to road safety, control of noise, and air pollution  S. 190(2) of M. V. Act  Rs. 1,000 for first offence   Rs. 2,000 for second or subsequent offences 
    Any person driving or allowing to drive in any public place a motor vehicle that is in violation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act or the Rules that relate to dangerous or hazardous goods.  S.190(3) of M. V. Act  One year of Rs. 3,000 for first offence or  both   3 years or Rs. 5,000 for second or subsequent  offences  or  both 
    Travelling in  a  stage  carriage  without  ticket  or  pass  or not  producing  the ticket  or  pass  on  requisition  S. 124 r/w S.178(1) of M. V.  Act  Rs. 500 
    Any individual  disobeying  directions  given  by  any  person  or  authority  who is empowered,  or  obstructing  any  person  or  authority who is discharging his functions  under  the  M. V.  Act  S. 179(1) of M. V.  Act  Rs. 500 
    Any passenger withholding information that is required or giving false information  S. 179(2) of M. V. Act  One month or Rs. 500 or  both 
    Trials of speed and racing  S. 189 of M. V. Act  One month or Rs. 500 or both 
    Any individual engaging himself as an  agent  or  canvasser  in  contravention  of  S. 93  or  Rules  made  under it  S. 93r / wS.193 of M.V. Act.  Rs. 1,000 for first offence 6 months or Rs. 2000 for second or subsequent offence or both. 
    Taking a vehicle without authority  S. 197 of M. V.  Act  3 months or Rs. 500 or both 
    Unauthorized interference with a vehicle  S.198 of M.V. Act  Rs. 100
