The Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, launched the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana – a health assurance scheme for the people of Odisha on Independence Day. Patnaik made it known on August 15 that the new health assurance scheme will ensure no underprivileged person in Odisha is denied medical treatments due to their economic condition.

Features of Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana

• The state-wide scheme is expected to offer coverage to 70 lakh families in the state.
• Protection for secondary and tertiary treatments can be availed through the cashless facility.
• The total coverage provided to each family is Rs.5 lakh on an annual basis.
• Women will be given extended coverage of Rs.2 lakh.
• The beneficiaries of the scheme will receive a reimbursement of the costs incurred from the government funds directly.

Implementation of Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana

The state government has already started to post letters to the beneficiaries of the scheme. The collectors have been asked to create and manage a 6-member committee in each district to review the proper distribution of the letters.

The Odisha state government emphasises on the fact that the Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana is an assurance scheme and not a regular health insurance scheme. It not only provides coverage for treatments but also focuses on improving the overall health situation of the state.
