Salvage is the total value or loss/damages to your car post a mishap. Total loss is when your car has undergone severe damage/wreck and is in a state where it can’t be repaired.
A cashless claim is offered by the insurers who have tie-ups with certain authorised garages that can provide car services to the policyholder, post a mishap. Post all the repair work is done, the insurer settles the cost for the repairs directly with the garage.

In what would be joy for women across of the country and satisfaction, Kotak Mahindra General Insurance, have announced that they will be offering cheaper car insurance premiums for women drivers through their campaign, DriveLikeALady. According to the General Insurer, the reason that they decided to offer cheaper car insurance premiums to lady drivers is because they can statistically prove that women drivers are safer than men and that their attitude on the road is way better than men as well. According to Kotak Mahindra Insurance, they personally have received lower claims from women than men. Speaking at the launch of the campaign, and reporting to Times, the Managing Director of Mahesh Balasubramanian, said that women tend to be more caring, patient, poised and calmer than men. This also reflects in their driving behaviour. Therefore, if men were to imbibe this positive attitude, our roads will be a lot safer. This thought formed the genesis of Kotak General Insurance’s #DriveLikeALady campaign. The IRDAI did not revise the motor insurance premium this fiscal year though it does so every year. This is most likely going to affect the overall profitability of insurance companies. This is so because the general insurance business largely depends on the motor insurance segment. Insurance companies expected an increase in the premium rates as the collections this year were low and the claims were high. Since the premium rates have not been revised, certain insurers may resort to cutting down on discounts to make up for the loss in revenue. Usually, the IRDAI increases the premium rate by 10% to 40% depending on the vehicle for which the change in rate is being made. Insurers were expecting at least a marginal increase this year. It is said that this is the first time in many years that the apex regulator has extended the validity of the current rates until further notice.
However, there were certain motor insurance premium hikes last year when the insurance regulator announced a new regulation which requires car owners to get a three-year long-term insurance policy and bike owners to get a five-year long-insurance policy.

According to a data by Kotak General Insurance for a duration of one year from July 2017 to July 2018, it has been found that women make fewer motor claims which makes it profitable for insurance companies to have more women as customers.
The loss ratio during the period was 46.94 per cent as compared to 60.69% for men.
The claims ratio for petrol and diesel cars bear similar results for women and men. The data clearly shows that for every 100 rupees of premiums paid, men claimed Rs.70 while women claimed only Rs.48 for diesel cars. For petrol cars, the loss ratio for men was 53.59% and 46.30% for women.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court said that a person borrowing a car is as eligible to receive the insurance claim in case of an accident as much as the owner.
The High Court bench dismissed a plea filed by Bajaj Allianz General Insurance Company against the compensation that the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT), Chandigarh had upheld the 26.12 lakh that was supposed to be paid to a family living in Sector-35.
In June 2010, a family had borrowed a Maruti Zen car to travel somewhere in Punab. While coming back it met with an accident which resulted in the death of one of the members of the family. The family had claimed compensation of Rs.1 crore from the driver of a tractor trolley.

In what would be good news for vehicle owners in the country as well as vehicle manufacturers, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has decided not to increase the third-party motor insurance premium rates for two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Usually, the third-party premium rates are revised every year by the IRDAI and the increased by 10-40%. However, following the Supreme Court of India ruling to mandate long-term third-party sales for four-wheelers and two-wheelers in September 2018, which has made even the third-party insurance policy an expensive purchase for vehicle owners, the IRDAI has decided not to increase the third-party premium rates. As per the new rates rolled out by the IRDAI, for two-wheelers below 75cc, the premium will stand at Rs.427, with the premium for 75-150cc set at Rs.720 and for high-powered vehicles above 150cc set at Rs.985. In the case of 4-wheelers, the premium for small cars has been set to Rs.1,850, while SUVs and cars above 1,500cc the premium has been set at Rs.7,890, and for sedans between the 1,000cc to 1,500cc the rate has been set to Rs.2,863.

The general insurance major Bharti AXA was awarded the ‘Non-life Insurer of the year’ by an important trade association, The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham). Assocham conferred this title to Bharti AXA for its contribution in the general insurance sector. The award was given to the company during the Insurance Leaders Meet 2019 and Excellence Awards in the city of Kolkata.
The general insurer’s focus on customers, digital integration, multifunctional technology, and cost-effective operational success is the reason the company was given the honour. Bharti AXA is a partnership between Bharti Enterprises and AXA, a French insurance company. The firm witnessed a growth of 32% in the first three quarters of the fiscal year in terms of the gross written premium.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) may hike the premium rates for third-party insurance policies by 10% by the end of the month. The new rates for FY 2019-20 will come into effect on April 1. The IRDAI had set up a special committee to look into the rates for the next financial year. The committee has made certain suggestions and submitted it to the IRDAI. The regulator will look into the details and announce its decision by the end of the month.
Executives in the insurance industry have stated that the cost of insurance has increased for insurance companies, so it only makes sense to increase the premium rates as well. Insurers are expecting a 10% to 15% increase in the premium rate for third-party insurance. An official from the insurance industry said that insurers are mostly not making losses any more, however, the current premium rate system will make it difficult for insurance businesses to break even.

In a survey by COCO by DHFL General Insurance based on customer behavior has revealed forgetfulness and absentmindedness as the main reason behind motor insurance policies lapsing.
The survey was conducted in Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai with 1,025 respondents taking part in the survey. 75% of the people who took part in the survey had an active auto insurance policy, while the rest had policies which got lapsed due to their failure to get it renewed.
Among the people with lapsed policies, 36% of the people blamed their insurer for failing to remind them about renewing their policies, while 23% blamed the insurance agents for not sending them a reminder.
26% of the people who had their policies lapsed admitted to forgetfulness as the reason behind their failure to not renew their policy on time.

Soon, your car insurance premiums will be influenced by your road manners. The Transport Department of India is considering a plan to penalise bad drivers and reward good drivers through insurance premiums. This plan is likely to be recommended to the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) soon.
A report by Times of India indicated that drivers who get penalised regularity for breaking road traffic rules may have to pay a higher premium in the future. On the other hand, drivers who have not received any traffic challans for five years are likely to get a good discount on their premiums.
To implement this strategy, the digital database of vehicles on the Vahan software will be linked with the IRDAI database. Similar process is already being followed in many countries including America. Here, the cost of car insurance could go up significantly for regular traffic offenders.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has organised a host of initiatives and programmes for the 30th National Road Safety Week in order to promote awareness about road safety. The 30th National Road Safety Week is being celebrated in the country between February 4 and February 10.
Further, a car rally has been organised to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The car rally will be flagged off by Mr. Rajnath Singh, the Home Minister, Ms. Sushma Swaraj, the External Affairs Minister, and Mr. Nitin Gadkari, the Road Transport Minister. The rally will conclude on February 24 and would have covered a distance of 7,250 km in total.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers has also commenced its campaign for the Road Safety Week. Seminars and workshops on road safety, motor vehicle insurance, role of the youth, emergency care, etc., will be held during the event.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance, which is the largest private-sector general insurance company in India, registered a 3.2% YoY growth in its net profit in the third quarter of the current financial year at Rs.239.14 crore. The insurer’s gross direct premium grew by 25.9% YoY to touch Rs.3,699 crore. This is against an industry growth rate of 13.6% during the period under review. The higher growth rate has been mainly attributed to the insurer’s motor insurance business.
Although ICICI Lombard General Insurance offers a diversified portfolio, the mandatory long-term third-party cover ruling of the Supreme Court benefited the insurer disproportionately. Due to this, the share of motor insurance in the company’s product mix increased to 42% during the third quarter of the financial year from 36% in the year-ago period.
The combined ratio, which is a measure of the insurer’s profitability, touched 95.9% during the period under review. In comparison, ICICI Lombard’s combined ratio in the second quarter of the financial year was 101.1%. The company’s solvency ratio during the period under review stood at 212%, which is significantly higher than the regulatory requirement of 150%.

Recently the compulsory personal accident cover (CPA) was unbundled by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). According to experts, this move is likely to bring a lot of relief to those who have availed CPA from January 1, 2019.
Earlier the insurance company had been asked by IRDAI to increase the cover amount to Rs.15 lakh for CPA and issue long-term policies. However, it remains to be seen how the insurance companies will implement this new rule.
IRDAI last week had announced the unbundling of the CPA cover and had directed the insurance companies to issue standalone CPA cover for people who own a vehicle. CPA cover will be available with both comprehensive policy and third-party liability policy. However, those who have already purchased a CPA with a cover of Rs.15 lakh need not purchase it again when they buy a new vehicle.

The Renault-Nissan alliance did not result in good performance in the year 2018 in India. The only models that fared well are the Duster and the Kwid. The newly launched, Captur, did not receive a good response as expected by the French car manufacturing company. However, both, Nissan and Renault have prepped up for the new year and offer great deals for cars from Micra to Duster. The Renault Kwid is being offered with a warranty cover for the fourth and fifth year as well as an exchange discount up to Rs.20,000. With a major discount of Rs.30,000, a cash discount of Rs.20,000 for select models, a corporate discount equal to Rs.5,000, and free car insurance for the first year, the Renault Duster is expected to push sales further this month. The Renault Lodgy is being offered with a discount equal to a whopping Rs.1.5 lakh. Also, this car comes with free insurance for the first year after purchase. The Renault Captur is being offered with discounts up to Rs.1.2 lakh. The Datsun Redigo is being offered with cashbacks, corporate discount, and exchange benefit taking the maximum discount amount to Rs.30,000. Along with this, the company is offering free insurance for one year. Among the Nissan cars, the Micra and Sunny are being offered at maximum discounts equal to Rs.55,000 and Rs.54,500 respectively. The discounts include cash discount, free insurance, exchange discount, and special discount.

Data released by luxury car manufacturers such as BMW India, Mercedes Benz India, Audi India, Volvo Cars India, and Jaguar Land Rover India (JLR) has showed that despite attractive discounts and schemes, the cumulative sales of luxury cars only increased by 4.9% to a total of 40,863 units in the year 2018. In comparison, in the previous year, 38,950 luxury cars were sold in India.
Officials from these companies mentioned that increased insurance costs, tighter liquidity conditions, and higher lending rates in the second half of 2018 could be a factor for the meagre increase in sales.
Mercedes Benz sold a total of 15,538 cars in the year 2018. In comparison, the car manufacturer sold 15,330 units in 2017. BMW Group India sold 11,105 cars in 2018, which was 13% over the number of cars the company sold in 2017. Audi is expected to release its sales figures shortly.
Jaguar Land Rover sold a total of 4,596 units, which was up by 16.2% from the previous year. Volvo Cars India sold 2,638 units, which was an increase of 30% from the number of units sold in 2017.

Car sales have been affected profusely this year due to the ever-increasing fuel prices, tight liquidity situation, as well as the change in IRDAI’s regulations that made car insurance more expensive for car owners. Most car manufacturers are witnessing either a drop in sales or a one-digit growth. The biggest car players in the country, Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motors were also affected by the weak buyer sentiment. While Maruti Suzuki recorded growth at the rate of 1% for the month of December, Hyundai recorded 4% growth. Honda cars also reported a growth of 4% for the previous month selling a total of 13,139 units. Tata Motors suffered a decline in domestic car sales by 8% for December 2018. While it sold 54,627 units last December, it sold only 50,440 this December. Toyota Kirloskar Motor India had reported a 15% decrease in sales for the month of November but saw a whopping 10% rise in sales for the month of December 2018. When compared with the sales figures of Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, and Hyundai, Toyota made the highest sales at 9% for the period from April 2018 to December 2018.

ICICI Lombard General Insurance has recently introduced an AI-backed solution that enables instant policy renewal of lapsed or expired two-wheeler insurance policies. The artificial intelligence based solution was developed in partnership with Microsoft and it is expected to benefit ICICI Lombard’s customers in the long run.
The AI-based feature will allow customers to capture images of their car (for which the insurance cover has already lapsed or expired) and upload it to the company’s ‘insure’ mobile app. The images will be analysed by the AI module, which will detect any damages that have been sustained by the vehicle. Post this, the break-in policy proposal will either be recommended for verification or accepted.
Mr. Sanjeev Mantri, who serves as the executive director of ICICI Lombard, announced that this solution would make the renewal of lapsed/expired policies more convenient, consistent, and real-time for customers, thus enhancing a user’s purchase experience.
This solution was developed by ICICI Lombard using the various offerings that are present on the Microsoft Azure platform such as the Azure Container and GPU-enabled Data Science Virtual Machines and open-source technologies like Tensorflow and Docker.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has relaxed its norms for the mandatory purchase of personal accident insurance along with vehicle insurance. Now, instead of buying personal accident coverage as a ‘bundled insurance’ with vehicle insurance, vehicle owners can buy any kind of personal accident coverage separately based on their preference.
In September, IRDAI came up with a ruling that it is mandatory for vehicle owners to buy personal accident insurance for Rs.15 lakh along with vehicle insurance. For this personal accident coverage, they have to pay an additional premium of Rs.750 per year. Earlier, IRDAI mandated personal accident coverage of Rs.1 lakh and Rs.2 lakh for bike riders and car drivers, respectively.
This relaxation in rule came into effect after the IRDAI consulted with various vehicle owners who already had personal accident insurance. Moreover, many vehicle owners had more than one vehicle. This ruling saved them the trouble of owning multiple personal accident policies.
