    The Diabetes Safe Insurance Policy from Star Health is a comprehensive insurance plan that is specially tailored to not only cover the complications of Type I and Type II diabetes, but also provides a cover against expenses incurred as a result of hospitalisation, outpatient treatment, and personal accidents. This plan can be purchased by any individual who has already been diagnosed with diabetes.

    Eligibility Criteria for Star Health Diabetes Safe Insurance Policy

    In order to purchase an insurance policy, policyholders will have to keep the insurer’s pre-defined eligibility criteria in mind.

    • The policy can be purchased by any individual between the ages of 18 years and 65 years, provided they are already diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus.
    • The policy can be renewed for life.
    • The policy can be purchased on an individual sum insured basis or on a floater basis.
    • The plan can be taken on a floater basis to extend the policy’s coverage to one’s spouse, provided at least 1 of the persons enrolled under the plan is diagnosed with diabetes.

    Sum Insured and Premium Range

    Sum Insured: The sum insured is the maximum sum of money that one can claim for hospitalisation/medical expenses from the insurer. The insurer is not liable to pay anything more than the sum insured amount.

    Features of Star Health Diabetes Safe Insurance Policy

    • This plan is available in two variants – Plan A and Plan B, and both variants can be purchased on an individual sum insured basis or on a family floater basis.
    • One can opt for a sum insured of Rs.3 lakh, Rs.4 lakh, Rs.5 lakh, or Rs.10 lakh.
    • Insurer provides policy buyers a 15-day free-look period.
    • The insurer provides policyholders a grace period of 30 days, and the policy will have to be renewed within the end of the grace period.
    • The sum insured can be enhanced/modified at the time of policy renewal.
    • Pre-policy medical screening is required for Plan A. There is no need to undergo a pre-policy medical screening if one is opting for Plan B.
    • Waiting periods as per the plan variant and the section type will be applicable. Claims cannot be raised during the waiting period.
    • Sub limits, as per the policy brochure, will be applicable for cataracts and diseases related to the cardiovascular system. Anything over this amount will have to be paid by the insured.
    • If the sum insured is exhausted, 100% of the Basic Sum Insured will be automatically restored, under both Plan A and Plan B.
    • Policy buyers can claim tax benefits under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act, 1961.
    • Policyholders can avail cashless treatment in over 6,000 network hospitals across India.

    Benefits of Star Health Diabetes Safe Insurance Policy

    Section 3 (Outpatient Expenses)
    • Cost of HbA1C tests and cost of fasting and Postprandial up to a sum of Rs.750 per event and up to a maximum of Rs.1,500 per policy period is covered
    • Other expenses incurred as a result of diagnostics, medicines, drugs, and medical consultation will be covered, as per the limits specified in the brochure
    Section 4 (Personal Accident) If one meets with an accident that causes death, the insurer will pay 100% of the sum insured amount as the Personal Accident Benefit

    • Donor expenses incurred for kidney transplantation surgery
    • Dialysis expenses up to Rs.1,000 per sitting for a period of 24 months
    • Diabetes-related claims will only be payable under Section 1
    • Claims related to diseases of the eye, cardiovascular system, peripheral vascular diseases, etc. are payable only under Section 1

    Exclusions under Star Health Diabetes Safe Insurance Policy

    • Exclusions applicable under Section 1 and Section 2 (for Plan A and Plan B):
      • Injury or disease as a result of war or nuclear weapons.
      • Treatments/hospitalisations caused due to HTLV-III, LAV, STDs, AIDS/HIV.
      • Hospitalisation/treatment as a result of childbirth, pregnancy, abortion, etc.
      • Treatments for weight control, sleep apnea, genetic disorders, external congenital disorders, etc.
      • Run-down conditions, convalescence, psychiatric disorders, etc.
      • Expenses incurred due to Balloon Sinuplasty, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Lasik Laser, etc.
      • Expenses incurred for medical tests/diagnostics that are not consistent with the treatment.
      • Expenses incurred for purchase of tonics, vitamins, naturopathy treatment, stem cell therapy, etc.
      • Hospital registration charges, record charges, etc.
      • Aesthetic treatments, cost of spectacles/lenses, hearing aids, etc.
    • Exclusions applicable exclusively to Section 2
      • Pre-existing diseases for 4 years, diseases/ailments contracted within the first 30 days, and specific diseases for 2 years.
      • Expenses incurred due to Frenuloplasty, Circumcision, Vaccination, etc.
      • Dental treatments or surgery for aesthetic purposes
    • Exclusions applicable under Section 4
      • Claims for events that happened before the policy was purchased
      • Accidental injury/death due to intentional self-harm, suicide, intoxication, self-endangerment, etc.
      • Claims arising due to a mental disorder, HIV/AIDS, STDs, etc.
      • Claims arising as a result of injury sustained while travelling by air, unless he/she was travelling as a regular, fare-paying passenger.
      • Accidents due to war, riots, insurrection, nuclear material, radioactive substances, nuclear terrorism, etc.
      • Claims arising as a result of extreme sporting activities and hazardous sports.
      • Individuals who are physically/mentally challenged, unless the same is specified at the time of purchasing the policy.
      • Accidents suffered while partaking in an illegal activity.
      • Accidents related to childbirth/pregnancy.
