Importance of Driving Licence in Gujarat

A few reasons why you should consider applying for driving licence are as follows:

    • Authorizes You to Operate Motor Vehicles: A driving licence authorises you to ride/drive a motor vehicle. No individual in India is permitted to operate motor vehicles in public places without a valid driving licence. Further, the tests that you clear to obtain a driving licence prove that you know how to operate motor vehicles and are aware of the various rules and regulations.
    • Mandatory to Have: The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 has made it mandatory for all those who wish to drive or ride a vehicle to have a driving licence. Thus, you will first have to apply for a learner’s licence and then apply for a driving licence.

    • Can be Used as ID Proof: You can submit your driving licence as ID proof when required.

How to Apply for a Driving Licence in Gujarat

The process to obtain a driving licence in Gujarat is as follows:

    Apply for a Learner’s Licence:

You will first need to obtain a learner’s licence (LL) to be eligible to get a permanent driving licence (DL). The applicant is required to submit the relevant application form to the RTO along with the required documents and fee.

To obtain the learner’s licence, the concerned individual will need to clear a test. Questions about traffic regulations and rules and traffic signage will be included in the test. The applicant will be asked 15 random questions, out of which at least 11 questions will have to be answered correctly to clear the test.

You will be allowed 48 seconds to answer each question. If you clear the learner’s licence test, a learner’s licence will be issued to you. On the other hand, if you fail the test, you will be allowed to retake the test after a period of 24 hours. The learner’s licence is valid for a period of 6 months from the date of its issue.

    Documents Required:

    • Duly-filled application in Form 2
    • Age Proof: Birth certificate, school leaving certificate, PAN card, passport, LIC policy, etc., can be submitted as age proof
    • Address Proof: LIC policy, school leaving certificate, Utility bills, or affidavit from the individual applying for the licence can be submitted as address proof
    • Medical certificate in Form 1(A)
    • Passport-size photographs of the applicant

How to Apply for a Permanent Driving Licence:

An individual who already has a learner’s licence can apply for a permanent driving licence. To apply for a permanent driving licence, the applicant will need to obtain Form 4 from the RTO. After keying in the required details, the applicant will have to submit the application form to the RTO along with the required documents and fee.

You can apply for a driving licence one month after obtaining the learner’s licence. However, you should ensure that you apply for the DL before the expiry of your LL. Once the application form has been submitted to the RTO and the fee has been paid, you can book a slot for the driving/riding test. If you clear the test, a driving licence will be issued to you.

    Documents Required:

    • Driving licence application form (Form 4)
    • Passport-size photographs
    • Address Proof: Voters ID card, ration card, LIC policy, valid passport, etc. can be submitted to the RTO as address proof.
    • Age Proof: Birth certificate, educational certificate, valid passport, etc., can be submitted to the RTO as age proof.

*Note: You may have to submit any other document that is requested by the Registering Authority.

Once issued, the driving licence is valid for 20 years or until you attain the age of 50 years. During this period, you can use your driving licence to ride/drive motor vehicles anywhere in the country. Make sure to carry your driving licence with you when riding your two-wheeler in order to be compliant with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
