    The first thing that comes to mind when the motorcycle is not starting, is the spark plug. The spark plug helps the engine to ignite with a spark. So, without a proper functioning spark plug for your motorcycle, the vehicle cannot function. Hence. it is important to know how to take care of the spark plug, so there would be no problem in your journey.

    The condition of a spark plug actually represents the condition of the engine and its functioning. As you already know, the engine needs engine oil for a smooth performance and functioning, so when you take out the spark plug, there will be soot or residues of the engine oil on the rings of the spark plug. The oil residue should be light to grayish brown, in a properly working engine. If it is darker, has a carbon like formation, or ash, it is time to get your vehicle checked by a mechanic.

    The dark residue may indicate damages to the engine parts like piston rings, valves, carburetor, insulators, electrodes, etc. This may lead to major damages to the engine if not taken care of at the right time.

    It is important to clean the spark plug once in a while, for a long run and good health. Here are a few tips and tricks to clean the spark plug;

    • Remove the cap slowly without causing any damage. If it’s too tight, then use a tool to remove it. If you are not aware of the procedure, then take it to the mechanic.
    • With a clean cloth, usually cotton waste, clean the cap and the inside of the spark plug. Check for the color of the residue deposited. This will help you repair the problem in the engine, if any.
    • Dip the spark plug in petrol or kerosene, it will easily remove the dirt or residue deposits. After this, grab a clean brush with metal strings and rub it thoroughly. You can also use sandpapers for that extra shine.
    • Put back the spark plug carefully with the help of a spanner, but do not screw it too tightly.
    • Also, do not forget to clean the spark plug cord and cap as it carries charge to the plug which helps in ignition. Look for leakages if any, and check for wiring.
    • It is recommended by the manufacturer to change the spark plug after few thousand kilometers.

    A motorcycle is a beloved asset of every bike enthusiast. So, it is important to maintain the bike in good condition and also essential to know the basic repair process in case of any mechanical breakdown in the middle of the road.
