    Elements of a Number Plate

All vehicles in India are required to have an affixed number plate by law. The format for number plates are fixed by the Government of India. For example, private vehicles are required to have white number plates with black lettering, while commercial vehicles are required to have yellow number plates with black lettering, and so on. Thus, the format of a number plate can denote a number of things about the vehicle.

The alpha-numeric codes that are present on a number plate consist of four elements. The various elements are as follows:

    • All number plates start with the code of the union territory or the state in which the two-wheeler or car has been registered. If you are registering your vehicle in Panaji, the number plate of your two-wheeler will begin with a “GA” since Panaji is located in Goa.
    • The next two digits will vary based on the district in which your two-wheeler is registered.
    • The third element is the unique registration mark or number. This is usually a 4-digit code. If the four-digit number runs out, an alphabet or two will be prefixed before it.
    • If the number plate is a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP), it will also have a holographic logo with the letters “IND” embossed under the logo.

This is especially useful in the event of an accident, crime, theft, or loss since it is likely that a vehicle with a number plate will be identified.
