While the demand for two-wheelers has been increasing at a steady pace on a year-on-year basis, there has also been a corresponding increase in the demand for VIP registration numbers or fancy numbers among vehicle owners. Individuals who wish to personalise their vehicle usually book fancy numbers/VIP registration numbers.

Since the demand for these VIP registration numbers is quite high, RTOs usually conduct auctions for the same. Interested vehicle owners can participate in these auctions and bid for a number of their choice. In the past, vehicle owners who wished to get special registration numbers for their vehicles had to travel to the regional RTO office. However, the Transport Department of Punjab, for the benefit of the residents of the state, has launched an e-Auction System, through which interested individuals can participate in the online auction.

    Elements of a Number Plate

The metal plate, which contains a combination of alphabets and numerals, that is attached to a vehicle is usually referred to as the vehicle’s number plate. All vehicles that ply on the road are required to have a number plate, as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The number plate usually contains 4 elements or parts.

The first two letters in the number plate represent the state in which the vehicle has been registered. The next two letters indicate the particular district within the state in which the vehicle has been registered. The next part of the number plate contains the unique registration code of the vehicle. This registration code can be customised/purchased by vehicle owners for a price. The fourth element in a number plate is a holographic logo with “IND” embossed under the logo. This logo, which was introduced in the year 2005, is present in all High Security Number Plates (HSRPs).

Process to Get a VIP Registration Number in Punjab

The Transport Department of Punjab has started an online auction process on its website to help vehicle owners book VIP registration numbers without going through any hassle. To simplify the auction process, the various VIP registration numbers are split into separate categories based on their sequence and representation. All of these special registration numbers are pooled for the auction, such that every participant gets an equal chance to get a VIP registration number of their choice.

During the auction process, participants can make bids for the registration number of their choice. After the auction, the highest bidder will be awarded the VIP registration number of their choice. Given that there is minimal human interference during the e-auction, participants can be assured of a simplified, hassle-free, and transparent bidding process. Need for Registration Mark/Number

The Motor Vehicles Act makes it mandatory for all vehicle owners to attach a number plate with a registration mark/number on their vehicle. Having a number plate makes it easy to identify a vehicle. Further, High Security Number Plates are tamper-proof, thus making your vehicle safer and less prone to theft. If you have purchased a two-wheeler or are looking to purchase a two-wheeler, make sure to register your vehicle at the earliest and attach the number plate to it.

    The Bottom Line

In addition to getting your vehicle registered, you should also make sure to also purchase a two wheeler insurance policy for your vehicle. Subject to the type of two wheeler insurance cover that you purchase, these policies can provide you coverage against vehicular damage, loss of the vehicle, third-party liability, theft, etc. Also, all vehicle owners are required to purchase motor insurance policies for their vehicles, as per the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Thus, make sure that you are fully compliant with the law by purchasing a two wheeler insurance policy for your vehicle.
