In recent times, the demand for VIP registration numbers for bikes has increased. Many bike enthusiasts with expensive bikes prefer getting a special registration number for their bikes to make a statement. Some others choose to get fancy registration numbers due to numerology reasons. The government has hence come up with an auction system to allot numbers to those who apply for fancy numbers.

    Elements of a Number Plate

Essentially, there are four parts to a number plate of a vehicle in India. They are:

    • The first two letters denote the state in which the vehicle was registered. Vehicles registered in Bhubaneswar will have ‘OD’ as the first part of the number as Bhubaneswar is located in the state of Odisha.
    • The next part i.e. the 2 digits after the first two letters indicate the RTO under which the bike was registered. Earlier, the district in which the registration was done was indicated by the digits but since several RTOs were set up, the digits now stand for the RTO.
    • The next part includes four numerals in a unique combination. If a certain combination of numbers is not available, the letters are changed and used in a whole new series.
    • The last part is an oval logo with the letters IND that stand for India.

    Need for Registration Mark/Number

The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 makes it mandatory for all bike owners to have a registration number plate at the front and back of the vehicle. The letters are required to be Latin letters and the numerals are to be Arabic numerals. The background colour and the font colour of the text for different types of vehicles such as private vehicles, commercial vehicles, vehicles of foreign consulates, etc. are fixed. Further, the number plates are expected to have adequate light so that the text is visible. The number plates are an important part of the vehicle as it helps identify the vehicle, especially at the time of theft, crime and so on.

    The Bottom Line

It is best for every bike owner to follow the regulations laid down under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and get number plates for their vehicles. Also, an additional guideline under the same Act is to get a motor insurance policy. The basic insurance policy type i.e. the third-party liability insurance policy type is mandatory. One can choose the third-party insurance type or pick a comprehensive insurance policy that offers a huge range of benefits. The insurance plan will provide coverage for any natural or man-made damages caused to the two-wheeler.
