Personalised number plates have recently become a rage in the country. Many two-wheeler owners pick fancy numbers as it is a status symbol, an identity, or due to reasons of numerology. The demand for fancy numbers has, hence, shot up in the recent past. Individuals in Gandhinagar, too, can avail fancy numbers by undergoing an auction process. With the advent of technology, the manual process has been replaced by an electronic process.

    Elements of a Number Plate

A bike owner’s number plate has four elements that are required to be incorporated no matter what. They are:

    • The first part of the number plate includes two letters that stand for the state or union territory in which the vehicle was registered. In the city of Gandhinagar, the first part of the number plate of a vehicle has ‘GJ’ which denotes Gujarat.
    • The second part of the number plate indicates the RTO in which the registration was done. Earlier, this section of the number plate indicated the district but it now indicates the RTO because of the rise in the number of RTOs in each district.
    • The third part of the number plate has a combination of 4 numbers that helps identify the vehicle. If a certain number is unavailable as it has already been registered, the numbers are prefixed with a letter. After all the letters have been used, two letters are used.
    • The fourth part has the letters ‘IND’ i.e. India in an oval-shaped logo.

    Need for Registration Mark/Number

Registering a two-wheeler is essential as it provides proof for ownership of the two-wheeler. Also, it is one of the important documents that need to be submitted when the bike is going to be sold to another party. The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 has clearly stated that no vehicle owner is permitted to ride or drive the vehicle without registering it. The registration number plate has to be displayed appropriately i.e. at the front and back of the two-wheeler.

    The Bottom Line

While picking an ordinary number or a fancy number is up to the two-wheeler owner, it is important to register a vehicle soon after it is purchased. The registration number works as a way of identification that can be used in case there is a theft or a crime. In addition to registration, it is important for every bike owner to get a two wheeler insurance policy. Insurance companies offer third-party liability insurance plans as well as comprehensive insurance plans. One can choose either of them based on the requirement.
