    While driving licences were traditionally issued in a book form, of late, many states have started to issue smart card driving licences. Smart card driving licences have quickly gained popularity since it is more durable, tamper-proof, and secure, when compared to traditional driving licences. Further, certain states in India have made it mandatory for individuals who wish to operate vehicles to have a smart card driving licence.

    Eligibility

    The eligibility criteria that you will need to meet to obtain a smart card driving licence is as follows:

    • To apply for a smart card driving licence to ride a two-wheeler with an engine capacity of 50cc or lesser, the applicant will have to be at least 16 years. In this case, the applicant will also have to submit a permission letter from his/her parents or guardians when applying for the smart card driving licence.
    • In order to apply for a smart card driving licence to ride a motorcycle that has an engine capacity of over 50cc or a private car, you will need to be 18 years of age.
    • To be eligible to apply for a smart card driving licence to drive a commercial vehicle, the concerned individual will have to be 20 years.

    Documents Required to Obtain a Smart Card Driving Licence

    The various documents that you will need to submit to obtain a smart card driving licence are as follows:

    • Address Proof: Rental agreement, utility bills, ration card, Aadhaar card, passport, etc., can be submitted as address proof
    • Age Proof: Birth certificate, passport, school transfer certificate, PAN card, etc., can be submitted as age proof
    • Recent passport-size photographs
    • Form 4 (permanent driving licence form)
    • Smart card driving licence form
    • Form 1/Form 1A (medical certificate)

    Process to Apply for a Smart Card Driving Licence Online

    • To apply for a smart card driving licence online, you should visit the official website of your state’s transport department and download the necessary forms.
    • Next, make sure to key in the required data into the form and attach the necessary documents.
    • Visit the RTO in your jurisdiction and submit the duly-filled application with the documents.
    • Post this, you will need to schedule an appointment for your road test and pay the applicable fee.
    • You will have to take the road test on the scheduled date. If you pass this test, your biometrics, which includes your photograph, fingerprints, etc., will be recorded.
    • You can then verify the information that was recorded and get it corrected if you spot any errors.
    • Your smart card driving licence will be sent to the address mentioned in your application form.

    Process to Apply for a Smart Card Driving Licence Offline

    • If you currently hold a learner’s licence and wish to obtain a smart card driving licence, you can visit the Regional Transport Office in your jurisdiction and obtain the necessary application forms.
    • You can then enter the required information into the application form, attach the required documents, and pay the applicable fee. Post this, you will need to book a slot for your road test.
    • If you clear your road test on the scheduled date, you will have to get your biometric details recorded at the RTO.
    • After the completion of the above-mentioned formalities, your smart card driving licence will be sent to the address specified in your application form.
    • If you already have a driving licence and wish to convert it into a smart card driving licence, you will need to visit the RTO, fill the application form, pay the fee, and get your biometric details recorded.

    *Note: Keep in mind that you will only be able to apply for a permanent driving licence/smart card driving licence after you have obtained a learner’s licence.

    Smart Card Driving Licence Application Form

    The smart card driving licence application form has three sections, which are as follows:

    • Applicant and Vehicle Details: In the first section of the smart card driving licence application form, details such as the applicant’s name, address, date of birth, blood group, class of the vehicle, etc., will have to be entered. Further, this section will also have the signature of the driving licence holder, the signature of the licence issuing authority, and the identification of the licence issuing authority.
    • Machine Reading Zone: In the second section of the smart card driving licence application form, the driving licence number, date of issue, date until which the driving licence is valid, the name of the applicant, class of the vehicle, etc., will be entered.
    • Endorsement Details: In the third section of the smart card driving licence form, endorsement details, which include the endorsement/challan number and date, fine, disqualification period (from and to), settlement/review date, etc., will be entered.
