  • Procedure to Obtain a Temporary Registration Number in India

    Temporary registration numbers are given to vehicles that haven’t obtained permanently registered yet. The validity of a temporary registration number is one month. Thus, the vehicle owner will need to obtain a permanent registration number for their vehicle within this period from an RTO in their jurisdiction.

    Process to Obtain a Temporary Registration Number

    To get a temporary registration number for your vehicle, you will need to do as follows:

    • You will need to first obtain Form 20 from the RTO or download it.
    • You will then have to key in the required details and submit the form along with the required documents to the RTO in your jurisdiction. Alternatively, you can also choose to submit it to a dealership that sells new vehicles, provided the dealership is recognised by the Transport Commissioner.
    • Certain states also allow vehicle owners to submit the application form online through the Parivahan website. In this case, the applicant will need to visit the website, key in the required details, upload the documents, and then submit it. Post this, the applicant will need to take a printout of the application form along with the acknowledgement form and visit the nearest RTO.
    • Along with your application form and supporting documents, you will need to pay the applicable fee to the RTO.

    Documents Required

    As an applicant, along with your application form, you will need to submit the following documents:

    • A copy of the sales certificate (Form 21)
    • Copy of the roadworthiness certificate from the manufacturer (Form 22)
    • Copy of the vehicle’s insurance certificate
    • Vehicle’s Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate
    • Applicant’s address proof
    • Applicant identity proof
    • Design approval copy, if the vehicle to be registered is a trailer or semi-trailer vehicle
    • If it is an imported vehicle, a copy of the customs clearance certificate will have to be submitted
    • Applicant’s PAN card or Form 60 and Form 61, as applicable
    • Applicable fee

    Extension of the Vehicle’s Temporary Registration Certificate

    The temporary registration is valid for a one-month period. The vehicle owner is expected to get their vehicle permanently registered within this period. However, one can also apply for an extension of the temporary registration certificate. To do so, the applicant will need to submit the following documents to the RTO:

    • Application form for temporary registration (Form C.R.Tem)
    • Copy of the roadworthiness certificate from the vehicle manufacturer (Form 22) or body builder (Form 22A)
    • Vehicle’s insurance certificate or cover note
    • Copy of the applicant’s address proof
    • Design approval copy, in case the vehicle is a trailer or semi-trailer vehicle
    • If the vehicle is an ex-army vehicle, the original sales certificate of the vehicle will have to be submitted
    • If the vehicle has been imported, the customs clearance certificate will have to be submitted
    • Applicable fee

    Applying for a temporary registration number for your vehicle is a fairly simple process. However, as an applicant, you should ensure that you are well aware of the process and the documents that you have to submit.
